چکیده

The seminary was concerned with questions arising in computing when the inputs to the computation can be corrupted. Such studies have implications for the manipulation, retrieval and transmission in the presence of errors and noise and they are related to many fields in Computer Science, Mathematics and Information Theory. Important technical tools come, e. g., from combinatorial search theory and the study of computational models (such as circuits, decision trees and branching programs) under the influence of random noise at the inputs. The number of participants was rather small which was certainly due to the fact that the STOC meeting was held at the same time. As a consequence, almost all speakers gave 60 minutes talks (including discussion). These long lectures covered a wide range of topics and were appreciated very much by the participants. There was also ample opportunity to discuss the topics of joint interest in the stimulating environment of Schloß Dagstuhl.

Group Testing with Multiple Mutually-Obscuring Positives

Group testing is a frequently used tool to identify an unknown set of defective (positive) elements out of a large collection of elements by testing subsets (pools) for the presence of defectives. Various models have been studied in the literature. The most studied case concerns only two types (defective and non-defective) of elements in the given collection. This paper studies a novel and natu...

Strict group testing and the set basis problem

Group testing is the problem to identify up to d defectives out of n elements, by testing subsets for the presence of defectives. Let t(n, d, s) be the optimal number of tests needed by an s-stage strategy in the strict group testing model where the searcher must also verify that at most d defectives are present. We start building a combinatorial theory of strict group testing. We compute many ...

Group Testing, the Pooled Hypergeometric Distribution and Estimating Numbers of Defectives in Small Populations

The testing of combined bacteriological samples — or “group testing” — was introduced to reduce the cost of identifying defective individuals in populations containing small proportions of defectives. It may also be applied to plants, animals or food samples to estimate proportions infected, or to accept or reject populations. Given the proportion defective in the population, the number of posi...

A Toolbox for Provably Optimal Multistage Strict Group Testing Strategies

Group testing is the problem of identifying up to d defectives in a set of n elements by testing subsets for the presence of defectives. We develop combinatorial tools that are powerful enough to compute man...

Adaptive Group Testing Algorithms to Estimate the Number of Defectives

We study the problem of estimating the number of defective items in adaptive Group testing by using a minimum number of queries. We improve the existing algorithm and prove a lower bound that show that, for constant estimation, the number of tests in our algorithm is optimal.

When is Individual Testing Optimal for Nonadaptive Group Testing?

The combinatorial group testing problem is, assuming the existence of up to d defectives among n items, to identify the defectives by as few tests as possible. In this paper, we study the problem for what values of n, given d, individual testing is optimal in nonadaptive group testing. Let N(d) denote the largest n for fixed d for which individual testing is optimal. We will show that N(d) = (d...
